The New York Times once wrote an article that stated the popular Icehouses in Texas were vanishing. That article dates back to 1998 and times have definitely changed. I can tell you that Texas will never allow an Icehouse to disappear because there is nothing like a nice cold beer on a hot Texas day!
The best way to define an Icehouse is to call it a mix between a saloon and a convenience store. But even that concept gets the 21st-century treatments thanks to places like The Dakota Icehouse. Located at 433 S. Hackberry Street, this Icehouse gives you that comfortable feeling that we all seek after a long day at work.
I stopped by the Dakota Icehouse on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to meet with some local artists, Los Nahuatlatos. One of the artists, Arturo, invited me out to visit a place I had never heard of, and seeing that I love finding new places in town, I had to go! I was already impressed with the artwork on the side of the building which proclaims “Just Be Nice Dammit!” We need more of that in this world but that’s a whole subject we can talk about later.
As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the great staff and welcomed with open arms! The menu selection is extensive with local beers from Texas all the way to imports and even wine, which is not something that you would typically find in an Icehouse. The best thing about all of this is the fact that they not only serve drinks, but they have some delicious food, too. Arturo mentioned a taco plate that I had to try, so of course there was no doubt in my mind that I would order that exact meal!
Okay, it’s not really a traditional taco, but when I tell you that it is one of the most delicious concoctions I have tried in a while… suffice it to say I ate 4 total. The chopped “tacos” with a cold beer go together like love and marriage. I am not a food blogger so I cannot be as descriptive as my friends, but I can tell you that you will not be disappointed!
The Dakota Eastside Icehouse is here to serve you and your friends. Keep up to date on what’s happening by checking them out on Facebook.
